Navis N4 is the platform most likely to appear on a container terminal shortlist anywhere in the world, and the one most often misunderstood before it is bought. This article explains what N4 is, how it relates to the older SPARCS product, which terminals it genuinely suits, and what a recognition layer has to do […]

For twenty years, gate recognition meant line scan cameras in purpose built portals. That single assumption put automation beyond the reach of most terminals, because it turned a software project into a construction project with a capital request attached. Modern AI OCR software for ports has removed the constraint. This article explains what changed, what […]

Every vendor of a container number recognition system quotes an accuracy figure. Almost none define how it was measured. That gap is where terminals lose money, because a number without a method cannot be compared between vendors or enforced against one. This article explains how to write an accuracy agreement that means something, and how […]

Most disputes between terminals and port automation companies trace back to a requirement nobody wrote down. Accuracy gets defined loosely, exception handling is never specified at all, and acceptance criteria are negotiated after deployment when the terminal has lost all leverage. This checklist gives you the clauses that matter, in the order they should appear […]

Most return on investment claims for port automation technology arrive as a single confident number from a vendor. A terminal cannot defend that number internally, because it was produced from somebody else’s assumptions about somebody else’s terminal. This article builds the model from the other direction, using four value streams and data you already hold, […]

Choosing a terminal automation system is one of the largest operational decisions a container terminal will make. It touches labour, throughput, safety, IT and the experience every trucker has at your gate. Yet most published material on the subject is vendor marketing that avoids the difficult questions. This guide takes the opposite approach. It explains […]

AI powered OCR has become a cornerstone of modern port automation and logistics operations. Yet even the most advanced systems can misread shipping documents under the wrong conditions. A single misread container number or incorrect cargo code can trigger delays, compliance failures, and costly manual corrections. Port and terminal operators seeking to automate document capture […]

Crane OCR Automation Software: The End of Manual Vessel Tallying at Marine Terminals Crane OCR automation software is rapidly changing how marine terminals manage container identification during vessel operations. Manual vessel tallying has long been the standard practice at ports worldwide, but it comes with significant risks. Missed container numbers, data entry errors, and delays […]
